This time with Fiona and Michael Mellett leading the way ...
Excellent work by the drum line, as well.

UPDATE: via the comments, JW gives the drumline roster: (from left to right) Chris Strawder, James Orta, and Abel Orta, Jr.
Still busy over the weekend here at world headquarters, so I'll keep the chit-chat brief. Here's the special from this weekend: "Gonna Lift You Up" by Jonathan Butler ... as performed by Michael & Fiona Mellett.
Among the things I love about the diverse musical styles done at Lakewood is that it sometimes leads me onto some fantastic musicians outside of my own preferred genres. Jonathan Butler is a case in point. I challenge anyone to watch his performance of "Falling in Love with Jesus" and not be a fan. It's one thing to sing that well. It's another to sing & lead that well while playing guitar. And it's nothing short of amazing that he's doing all that while playing fingerstyle. So the music is going it's own way while his vocals dance around the chords and multiple fingers doing different things all throughout. I've got no clue how you do this sorta thing by natural means.
Hey, it was almost Sunday video. Had to work for a good chunk of the day. My bad.
This is actually Fiona's reprise of this song. Last year's version is here.
I finally got around to landing in the sanctuary with enough time to catch some of the final run-through by the band and choir, including a trial run of this song. Fiona's certainly got a way of filling up every corner of the place with her voice. Just a suggestion if you're listening to the video: crank it.
For a portable version of the song, Darlene Zschech's is sufficient.
I should point out that we had a great combination (for my taste, anyway) for this past weekend's praise & worship: Israel, Aimee, & Cindy. You get Israel's usual high-energy songs mixed in with just enough of two of the better female vocalists around. Yeah, I'm partial & I'd probably pick a full set with either Cindy or Aimee, but Israel has his own way of keeping you on your feet (or higher) that I love.

Can't believe I let this much time go by without running some samples of Fiona Mellett's CD, "Water in the Wilderness." But after having an opportunity to meet Fiona and Michael Mellett last night, I'm reminded of the need to do just that. Time's a little pressed to go into a lot of depth about what I liked about this CD, but trust me ... it's good. As if Fiona's voice wasn't enough of a selling point - or Michael's backing vocals, for that matter - there's Michael Hodge doing the guitar work all over this disc.
Unfortunately, I don't see the CD on the Lakewood bookstore website and if it's listed anywhere else for sale, it's a mystery to me. So just be sure to make it a point to look for it at the Lakewood bookstore whenever you're there in person. Spin the samples listed to the side and see if there's anything that catches your interest. There's a pretty good bet that there might. Personally, I'm a fan of the hyper-catchy number "This God He Is Our God." I'm convinced that if you listen to it three times in a row, you'll be singing it all day long. And possibly well into the rest of the week. I included the Spanish number at the end of the disc among the samples. If nothing else, it establishes - together with this clip - that the girl certainly likes her some salsa. |
Salsa ... what goes well with chips. Or, what Fiona Mellett brings to Lakewood. Had to go with the Sunday footage for two reasons: One, I didn't really care to see the back of my head from the Saturday clip. Two, they added a little dance number in the background on Sunday. Watch and learn a dance move or two ...
I had to dig out two moments from this weekend's service. Simply had to. Fiona's solos are always worth an encore and I'd be completely negligent to let some nifty guitar soloing by Michael Hodge go unnoticed. Enjoy them both ...
