» EP Times: Review: Chris Tomlin concert more like church service

The Traveling Tomlin & Houghton Show gets reviewed in their El Paso visit. Here's the blurb on our own half of that duo ...

But it was Houghton who kicked off the night with a few funky tunes, some gospel and a touch of Caribbean beat. This talented performer, who is also a worship leader at Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church in Houston, has an amazing voice (I was reminded of Donny McClurkin) and can really play jam on his guitar.

From the start, he and his lively band had the crowd singing and dancing to songs such as "Friend of God" and "Say So." He talked about his upbringing, calling himself "Halfrican-American." The band also performed some songs from it's soon to be released compact disc "The Power of One."

I'm still trying to figure out what it means to "play jam" on a guitar. Whatever it means, it sounds like the show was pretty good. Anyone take in the Houston stop last Friday?

Honestly, I'm still a little overwhelmed from Friday night so I will try to keep the gushing brief...

God showed Mom and me some of that unprecedented favor Pastor keeps talking about. There was an insert for presale tickets in his new cd. Being the music lover that I am, I got it the day it came out, HURRIED home and followed the instructions... a few weeks later... mass hysteria ensued when front row tickets arrived!!!! AAAAAHHHHH!!!!!! Totally unexpected. Israel is awesome, we all know that, but if you haven't had a chance to experience Chris Tomlin LEADING WORSHIP, not in concert, I suggest you do... It's amazing. He's amazing. Hello Love! I was the lead on a Russian project at work so when he sang part of How Great is Our God in Russian, I freaked out! Who would have thought?!?!?! Israel & Chris together? I really can't even describe it. Little Sonny Houghton will be a mighty force for the Kingdom one day. I can't wait to see that!

Maybe there is a reprise in our future... who knows...

Round two of MWS in a few weeks... he's doing a free brown bag concert that day too. Oh, and the choir special this weekend is rad! It's so powerful; it will be hard to keep it together in the choir loft.

Hope the video is back up and running correctly for you! :)

Thanks for the update, Rachel. I got that little insert with my CD, too and talked myself out of getting tix that first day. So I'll probably spend a little time today kicking myself. I wasn't quite up to a trek out to the Berry Center after having seen Tomlin with Matt Redman previously. Great facility, just a bit of a hike for me.

My own unprecedented favor, however, arrives in the form of Over The Rhine coming to town on May 1 ... and playing downtown, at that!

Lookin' forward to the choir special this weekend. You guys always do a great job.
