On the Reading List: August

Proving that I may never learn my lesson on picking out reading material too far in advance, here's what's on tap for next month (for now) ...

» The Bible Jesus Read (Philip Yancey)

... and I'm leaning towards another vow to pick up Tom Wright's "Acts for Everyone" commentary. My choice of Daniel Berrigan's "The Kings and Their Gods" essentially qualifies as a commentary on the first and second book of Kings. I'm working my way through it now and have to admit it's a weird read. Granted, I knew Berrigan's own history would lead to a lot of weird material that I'd either wildly agree with or just as wildly disagree with. But the book has a relative lack of flow to it and the actual reading process is something of a chore. Still rewarding in spots and well worth Berrigan's insight into the pathology of power. But I still might prefer the story if it were told in a truer narrative format.

That said, I think I'm set on Yancey since I thoroughly enjoyed his writing in the two previous books of his I've read. And the topic of this book is boiling to the top of my list of things to be inquisitive about. The shopping cart is currently sitting at a few bucks under the amount needed for free shipping (there's a fascinating political nonfiction book in there as well. When you're in need of being bored, ask me all about it). Adding Tom Wright to the bundle solves that without blowing the budget. Don't be shocked if I push it back yet another month. If there's anything else out there on the market that fits with anything else I've read & reviewed here, by all means, drop a recommendation in the comments or via email.
