Pastor Greg Boyd kicks in a few movie reviews over at his blog. One item of interest, his take on Into the Wild.
Into the Wild: *** The true story of a well-to-do kid who left it all behind to "find himself." He ends up dying in the Alaskan wild. Slow moving, but very well told. The layers in this film are incredible. I saw this story as a powerful commentary on the destructive deception of individualism. We're conditioned to think that the way to find ourselves is by getting alone - when in fact, as this man learns, too late, "no man is an island." We are our relationships.
Boyd has touched on his conceptualization of "individualism" as a bad thing in his recent sermon series. I have to confess to that being a bit challenging on my own very "individualistic" part. Still, I get where Boyd is going with it and I actually agree with his view on this. If time opens up tonight, I might blog some audio where he clarifies that some.
His take on the movie, I generally agree with. You can (re-)read my spin on it here. Now, who do I have to nag in order for him to give a positive review of Rock & Roll High School?
UPDATE: Oh, neglected to mention that I'll once more be operating a Movie Night adventure at the Greenway Edwards Cinema. December 28th. Charlie Wilson's War opens around that time and I'll be planning on catching that one. Earlier in the month - like a week before this - Walk Hard comes out. With a little luck, I won't talk myself out of seeing that one. More details to come as the time gets closer.
