Summer Reading

For anyone hoping to log some summer reading miles this time of year, David Crumm has a rather intriguing list of 10 for the ... um, road. There's a decent mix of deep reading mixed in with some more accessible stuff and a few points in between. China Galland's "Love Cemetary" stands out for me as something I might want to locate for a preview next trip to the B&N. All in all, it's a great list that I wish I had the free time to soak up.

My own hopes for the summer start with getting through some of Eugene Peterson's material. Namely:

» "A Long Obedience in the Same Direction"
» "Christ Plays in 10,000 Places"
» "Eat This Book"
» "The Jesus Way"

My preference for a starting point tends to vary depending on what hour of the day it is. Current mood is set to "Eat This Book." Christianity Today has an excerpt that's fresh from being read and reread during this past evening. "Long Obedience" has been on the radar the longest and gets an occasional ping of renewed interest. Good bet on those two getting read for sure.

Beyond that, another nice mid-year re-read of "The Ragamuffin Gospel" is always good for the soul. And there's a paperback release of Frances Collins' "The Language of God" for those of us who get into a scientific bent every now and then. If I were to plan much more beyond that, I'd hit overload or bankruptcy too soon. As always, a few nonfiction titles will break the pattern up a bit. Those tend to be more impulse decisions, though.

SIDENOTE: Christianity Today has their own annual best books. Definitely another good list and a reminder that Miroslav Volf looks like an author I need to get around to reading. There's a pretty good overlap of stuff I've either already read and books that have piled up in my backlog of stuff to read. Such is life. Maybe I should settle for a simple goal of wrapping up "Good to Great" within the coming week.
