A few brief reflections from the Bethany Dillon show at Chick-fil-A on Tuesday. It was my first trip to one of the KSBJ Brown Bag concert things, so I was impressed with the great turnout that was there. I arrived about a quarter of an hour late hoping to minimize the down time and just hear some good tunes. I picked up a CD since the price was right. Dillon's style of music isn't entirely my cup of tea, but it's clear that she has great voice and the songs are really well-written. I'm sure I'll have a favorite song off of the CD once I spin it.
The performance was just a one-gal performance: Bethany + acoustic guitar. Nice combo for her style. What stood out with me is that her stage banter wasn't quite as artistic as her music. I was reminded that in all of our cases, there's usually one medium that we do particularly well in - or to be more precise: better than other mediums in. While it stood out that Bethany's banter wasn't quite as entertaining as her songs, it makes me appreciate my own quirks in that regard. I do far better typing out my thoughts than thinking out loud. In sharing this classic article on introverts with my good friend Dale, I noticed the following:
We tend to think before talking, whereas extroverts tend to think by talking, which is why their meetings never last less than six hours. "Introverts," writes a perceptive fellow named Thomas P. Crouser, in an online review of a recent book called Why Should Extroverts Make All the Money? (I'm not making that up, either), "are driven to distraction by the semi-internal dialogue extroverts tend to conduct. Introverts don't outwardly complain, instead roll their eyes and silently curse the darkness." Just so.
Understanding one another usually goes hand in hand with understanding how each of us communicates best. It occassionally drives both me and my boss crazy since we're very different in this regard. But we understand our differences, so we can laugh it off. In any event, it was great to hear Bethany Dillon performing live ... the way she communicates best.
