Movie Season

I'm woefully behind on my movie watching this fall/winter. I totally missed "Facing the Giants" when it was first released. Lucky for me, the movie is now making the rounds in the dollar cinemas. I'm also overdue for watching "The Nativity Story," which is still in the big theaters. I haven't had any luck spotting "One Night With the King" in the dollar theaters, though that may come in a few more weeks if it ever does.

A good movie out now is "The Pursuit of Happyness" based on the true story of a homeless man who goes on to become a successful stock broker. That ought to make up for the fact that, as a fan of the horror movie genre, I'll also be taking in the latest scary movie to hit the screens on Christmas day: "Black Christmas." I'm sure someone'll have to pray for my soul over that, but I'll defend some good to come of being an aficionado of horror flicks.

But the real reason I wanted to bookmark a few good movies was the wealth of a few new releases on the horizon:

1/19/07: "God Grew Tired of Us" - This is about three refugees from Sudan who escape the genocide in that county and go on to settle in the United States. This is one of those artsy documentaries that will take a while to open in Houston. So far, I haven't spotted a release date in town. Probable location for it will be at either Angelika or one of the two Landmark theaters in town.

2/23/07: "Amazing Grace" - the story of William Wilberforce's efforts to end the British slave trade. Look for this one to get plugged a lot in churches as well. It'll be in wide release, so it should be hard to miss.

With a little luck, GGTOU will find it's way to Houston. Among the selling points of that movie, for me, is that Nicole Kidman does some narration in it. If there's anything else out there that I might be persuaded to add to the calendar, by all means let me know.
